Straight into the calm before the storm. This was the feeling that came over me as I entered The Coffee Cave this past Sunday evening. The performance area was devoid of all life, with the not-so-subtle exception of Brooklyn native, and friend, MeLo-X, as he went through his sound check. Electronic frequencies flowed through the woofers that would spiral many into another dimension of existence. It was his first show since the release of his latest project, More Merch, and he was in Jersey. MeLo hit the stage alongside Garden State representers and Jersey Klan members, Moruf and OGM. What proceeded was and high- energy evening that let people know Jersey is making it’s own wave in this proverbial game. The newly sheetrocked yet unfinished walls, the plywood flooring, the rain leaking in as it pounded the ceiling were all factors that contributed to the raw, homegrown vibes that came across on this particular occasion. A feeling that is completely organic, and completely Jersey. I’m not trying to deny the inspiration that New Jersey takes from New York City, but we tell our own stories, and we’re glad they’re being heard. Have a look…
